Health and Safety is one of the essential aspects of a school’s business management. Good health and safety management will prevent accident and loss, contribute to a safe, healthy and happy workplace and will ensure the compliance with current legal requirements.

As part of this service, the Council’s Corporate Health and Safety Team will provide a H&S Management System that includes a standard template H&S Policy and other supporting documents.

The main benefit of this service is having professional advice, guidance and support locally from highly trained and experienced H&S practitioners. We are readily available to answer questions and will attend your school when the situation requires it.

In a standard health and safety management system, it is essential that the processes and procedures are monitored to ensure they remain up to date and in line with updated regulation and best practice. In order to achieve this, the system should be audited in line with Plan-Do-Check-Act. As part of this service, your school will be audited at least annually and provided with an action plan to help you rectify any identify deficiencies. The audits are carried out on an open and friendly manner, where we discuss the findings and give advice on achieving compliance as we carry out the audit. We will be your critical friend, pointing out shortfalls but supporting you in resolving them. Haringey maintained schools must be audited once a year.

We can offer support in accident/incident investigations to ensure they capture all of the relevant information in the eventuality of an enforcement visit, enforcement action or civil claim. Our team will report significant accidents/incidents to the Health and Safety Executive on your behalf under RIDDOR Regulations.

Running educational visits that offer pupils the required educational outcomes and enhancing and fulfilling experiences is invaluable to your children. Those visits however are required to be organised thoughtfully and carefully to ensure so far as is reasonably practicable the safety of staff and pupils. Our team offers access to Evolve, software specially programmed to record these visits. The team will comment and review the submitted documentation, including risk assessments, to guide and support you in organising a successful visit. For maintained schools, category 3 visits (overnight, overseas, adventurous activities) must be approved by the LA, and this is done through Evolve.

One of the benefits of this service is free or discounted access to health and safety training courses. The courses are delivered by our excellent H&S practitioners or by external specialists that will make the course relevant, enjoyable and worth taking. We will be able to commission bespoke H&S training courses to your setting. In addition schools will hacess to an online training package through IHASCO. The package includes a Learning Management System (LMS)  which will allow schools to effectively manage H&S training and provids access to wide range of accredited courses.

Full access to CLEAPPS and the support of a Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) and a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) is also another advantage of our service. For schools with radioactive sources, the RPO will carry out an annual inspection to give you the required piece of mind that they are well managed.

Ours is an established, highly experienced team with an extensive educational establishment background, registered with The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health to at least Graduate membership.
